9-1 Form & Rules of Government

Description

Structure

PNG has 326 LLGs. The structure looks like this:

  • Momase Region (a recently devised portmanteau word which combines the first two letters of Morobe, Madang, and Sepik)
  • Madang Province
    • Middle Ramu District (the capital is Simbai)
    • Josephstaal rural LLG
      • ward 24 Arimatau (Ingis)
      • ward 25 Absakul (Kokoma, Matat + Pal)
      • ward 26 Kokomasak (North of Pal)

Kokoma is in ward 25. Kokomasak is a different village in a different tok ples (Set gestured to the North).

Elections

Middle Ramu Open is the seat an MP fills for the district. Currently, the MP is Kansol Harwai Kamdaru who will serve 2022-2027. It's his first term in parliament and he belongs to Pangu Pati. He has a grade 10 education

Kaunsil

Garatan is our "kaunsil". I'm guessing for ward 25? I can't find any info online that defines what a kaunsil is, their role, or their authority. I found an old report from 1997 going over the history that suggests they were appointed as helpers to the kiap (aka patrol officer, district officer). It's looking to me right now that kaunsil is unrecognised by the PNG government, and it's merely a social status label.
