If Jesus didn't die could we go to heaven?

I have been getting the impression that they think that Jesus opened the door to people being able to achieve works righteousness to get to heaven. I asked what would happen if Jesus hadn't died.

(Jesus died and made a road for us and now there is a road. If he didn't die he wouldn't have prepared a road for us is what we say. If Jesus didn't die would we all go to hell? -he's not sure what to say- We don't know, we've heard what the spirit says and we follow what we've heard. Jesus died and went to hell and made a road for us, so there is a road. If he didn't die there wouldn't be a road, so we'd get pain. That's what we say.)
